I’m quite surprised I’m having to write this, to be honest, but write it I will!
Following Fabinho’s average 45 minutes against Manchester City in a meaningless pre-season friendly, our shiny new holding midfielder, someone we’ve needed for years, bore the brunt of Liverpool fan criticism online.
I italicise the term fan, as some of the tweets were completely ridiculous and not befitting of someone who calls themselves a Liverpool supporter. Fair analysis is one thing; but questioning a 24-year-old Brazil international, who cost £44m, has got to a Champions League semi-final, won Ligue 1, played for Real Madrid – and everything in between – is madness.

Fabinho: I will convince Mbappe to sign for Liverpool
It’s more reflective of our culture of instant gratification; the ability to respond as and when things happen than take time to reflect – but I still found it pretty disappointing.
In reality, Fabinho has enjoyed a solid pre-season in which he’s getting fit, learning how his team-mates play and understanding Jurgen Klopp’s demands.
Every Liverpool fan should have complete faith in Fabinho’s ability – and also be patient enough to let him grow into his role.
Once he does, you’ll see a holding midfielder who can win the ball back, support his defence, drive with the ball and pass it, too.
Klopp doesn’t spend big money on average footballers – and that’s a fact.
Let’s give Fab the love we’re handing out to Naby Keita, and watch him repay us ten times over.
