‘Hidden star’ works his way up the pecking order after wowing Klopp in LFC pre-season

Liverpool may have discovered yet another gem this pre-season as Nathaniel Phillips has reportedly caught the eye.

Initially brought in to make up the numbers, that is supposedly no longer the case as he works his way up the pecking order in defence, according to a detailed report in the Echo.

That piece suggests Phillips, 21, is now fourth choice centre-back due to the current injury status of Joel Matip.

This is quite a turnaround from a low-key young player who had a bad injury that hampered his progress last season.

But as shown by Trent Alexander-Arnold last term, youngsters always have a chance at Liverpool, even with the big names brought in by Klopp.

The German tactician has shown he’s not one to be too taken in by reputations, and will allow youth to stake their claim if they’re good enough.

The Echo reports that Phillips has really taken things in his stride in pre-season, with the report describing him as the team’s ‘hidden star’ in the build-up to the new campaign.
