There’s been so much rhetoric about Liverpool being ‘big spenders’ that ‘simply have to challenge’ for the Premier League title…
We have brought in Virgil van Dijk, Alisson, Fabinho and Naby Keita for big money in 2018, although the latter was agreed back in 2017.
But in reality, Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp have spent less than our rivals since he arrived at the club in October 2015.

This thread from Joel Rabinowitz proves as much. Since 2014/15, Liverpool have a net spend of £108m, which is the second least of the top six.
Under Klopp, he averages £42m net spend per season, which is nothing in comparison to Manchester City and Manchester United – the two sides were apparently now on an even financial keel with:
Net spend over the past 5 seasons (since 2014/15):
1. City, £575m
2. United, £492m
3. Arsenal, £265m
4. Chelsea, £207m
5. Liverpool, £108m
6. Spurs, £49m— Joel Rabinowitz (@joel_archie) August 14, 2018
SINCE KLOPP'S ARRIVAL (Net spend):
1. City, £404m
2. United, £320m
3. Chelsea, £208m
4. Arsenal, £162m
5. Liverpool, £126m
6. Spurs, £45m— Joel Rabinowitz (@joel_archie) August 14, 2018
Can we win the title this season? Yes – if we get lucky and avoid injuries – but it’ll be a monumental achievement.
We’re underdogs, and that’s without even factoring in what the Manchester clubs (and Chelsea) are spending on wages.
