Lyon’s honcho Jean-Michel Aulas has claimed for the first time that he genuinely believed Nabil Fekir was Liverpool bound this summer.

The Frenchman had played a game in the media in which he regularly suggested there were multiple suitors, but everyone knew Fekir only had eyes for Anfield and that we’d not only agreed a fee and a contract with the player, but had even conducted his introductory club interviews.

“In the beginning, when we thought about our summer transfer window and how to organise the future squad, we thought that he was practically gone,” he admitted, cited in the Echo.

“That’s why we have been able to adapt things.

“We spoke with Chelsea representatives, and they had no interest at all in him. From then on, we realised we could change our plans (as Nabil would stay).”

Fekir though is staying at Lyon after we pulled out of a deal due to an issue discovered in his medical with his knee.

It’s sad for the player, but Fekir gets to captain his side in the Champions League and if he gets his head back in the game, can only enhance his reputation further following a World Cup win.

Fekir will get a big move eventually; we’re just not sure where.
