LFC were forced to extend Hendo’s contract due to City interest

Back in 2015, when Liverpool lost Raheem Sterling to Manchester City, it could have actually been a whole lot worse.

Dom King reports in the Daily Mail that our Premier League rivals wanted Jordan Henderson as well, but that Liverpool managed to extend his deal three years ago. He confirms that City have remained ‘long-term admirers,’ hence why it was crucial to renew terms this week as well.

Henderson is now contracted with us until 2023, and we expect he’ll be the club captain throughout Jurgen Klopp’s reign, regardless of whether he’s a first-choice starting midfielder.

The boss brought in Fabinho this summer, and although the Brazilian is yet to play competitively, will surely take up the anchorman role once he’s up to speed.

Hendo can obviously rotate the position Klopp refers to as ‘the no.6,’ but actually think he offers something in a box-to-box role, too, which takes advantage of his running and ability to press.

At some point this term, we’d be intrigued to see a Fabinho, Naby Keita, Henderson trio.
