Liverpool open talks with early season star over new contract – report

Liverpool are reportedly preparing to offer Joe Gomez a new deal as a reward for his outstanding start to the season.

The defender has been in superb form across the Reds’ four-game unbeaten run, striking up a formidable partnership with Virgil van Dijk.

Injuries to Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip towards the end of pre-season have paved the way for Gomez to enjoy an extended run in his preferred centre-back position.

He has already taken full advantage of the opportunity, with his form early on in the campaign earning him a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

The 21-year-old was handed a start in Saturday’s 2-1 UEFA Nations League defeat to Spain, lining up on the right-hand side of England’s back three.

Liverpool are now in talks with Gomez over a new contract that would see his wages move closer towards that of his senior teammates, reports the Mirror’s Tom Hopkinson.

Gomez signed a new long-term contract at Liverpool back in January 2017 which will see him stay at the club until at least 2022.

This marked an expression of the club’s faith in the then-19-year-old following his bright impression under Brendan Rodgers over the opening weeks of the 2015/2016 campaign.

Sadio Mane arguably remains the frontrunner to earn an extension at Anfield in light of his stunning impact since signing from Southampton in 2016.

The Senegalese star has already seen fellow frontmen Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah pen long-term commitments to the club this year, as well as skipper Jordan Henderson.

He will likely be next in line after notching four goals and emerging as a standout figure over Liverpool’s first four league games this season.
