Liverpool World Cup winner open to switching international allegiances

Sheyi Ojo admits he would be ‘honoured’ to play for Nigeria’s senior side if given the opportunity.

The Liverpool star’s parents are both from Nigeria, therefore making him eligible to play for the Super Eagles if offered the chance.

He still also has the freedom to switch international allegiances having not yet made an appearance for England’s senior team.

Ojo has been in the England youth setup since U16 level and played five games as the Three Lions’ U20s won the World Cup in 2017.

Whilst his current priority remains his club career, the 21-year-old hasn’t turned a blind eye to his future on the international stage.

He told BBC Sport: “It’s obviously a massive nation. I’m just really focused on club football at the moment, but I’m excited for the future, both club and country.”

“It’s starting to get to the time where I have to start thinking about my future. And of course, if Nigeria were to call me now it would be an honour.”

“Of course, if I was to get selected I’d definitely think about it, I’d never turn down Nigeria.”

Ojo made his full debut for Stade de Reims in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Dijon FCO after signing for the French club on a season-long loan in August.

The winger signed a new long-term contract at Liverpool prior to his move having made a bright impression throughout pre-season.

His latest temporary stint away from the club follows his spell with Fulham on their way towards promotion to the Premier League last season.

Ojo’s fine form at Craven Cottage was cruelly hampered in the second half of last season when injury saw him sidelined for the team’s playoff run, including their Wembley showdown.

Demonstrations of his bursting pace and unpredictable flair saw him surface as a target for a number of Championship clubs in the summer, as well as reminding why there have been such high expectations of his talent on Merseyside.

The talent is undoubtedly there for him to flourish during his time in France.
