Chelsea vs. Liverpool – Sturridge screamer rescues point for Reds

Daniel Sturridge came off the bench to score a magnificent late equaliser and earn Liverpool a deserved point against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The Reds went behind in the 25th minute when Eden Hazard took advantage of a defensive lapse to drill home an opening goal for the hosts.

A stern defensive display from Chelsea and Liverpool’s lack of cutting edge left Jurgen Klopp’s men frustrated in their subsequent search for a leveller.

Their persistence eventually paid off in the 89th minute thanks to Sturridge’s exquisite curling effort beyond a helpless Kepa Arrizabalaga from 25-yards out.

The contest underlined the title credentials of both sides as they extended their respective unbeaten starts to the Premier League campaign.

Klopp made nine changes from the team that lost 2-1 to Chelsea in Wednesday’s League Cup clash.

This included a welcomed return for Virgil van Dijk after the Dutchman was substituted with a rib injury in the second half of the Reds’ 3-0 win over Southampton.

Salah issued early first half warnings of his threat as he drifted into central areas, only to see two curling efforts fail to trouble Kepa between the sticks.

David Luiz orchestrated the best chance of the game when his stunning pass released the run of Willian, who saw his shot blocked by a well-positioned Alisson.

The hosts took the lead shortly after when Hazard rounded off some slick link up play in midfield with a drilled left-footed finish into the far corner.

Liverpool almost issued the perfect response on 32 minutes when Salah had an effort cleared off the line. Having beaten Marcos Alonso to Roberto Firmino’s through ball and rounded goalkeeper Kepa, the Egyptian failed to generate enough power to beat Antonio Rudiger.

The Reds continued their push for a goal after the break, with Sadio Mane forcing Kepa into a superb save low to his right-hand side.

Alisson was called into action moments later when he denied Hazard in a one-on-one situation after Liverpool had been caught sleeping with a quick free-kick.

Klopp then made the first of three bold substitutions as he replaced a quiet Salah with Xherdan Shaqiri.

The Swiss international was involved within minutes of coming on as he squandered a golden opportunity to turn home Andrew Robertson’s low cross.

Firmino then had a header blocked off the line by Luiz after leaping to meet James Milner’s disguised cross.

Klopp turned to his bench again for inspiration, introducing Naby Keita and Sturridge amid his side’s efforts to rescue a point.

Returning to face his former employers, Sturridge picked up the ball outside of the box before unleashing a fierce curling strike to find the top corner in the 89th minute.

A draw marked a worthy result on the back of outstanding defensive performances from both sides and Liverpool’s attacking bravery as the game progressed.
