We think Dejan Lovren was Liverpool’s best performer yesterday, arguably by some distance.
But Garth Crooks selected Joe Gomez in his BBC Team of the Week instead, and decided to have a go at Lovren, who he claimed made the defence jittery.
Crooks writes:
“In a game at Anfield where very few people managed to keep their cool, Gomez did. Virgil van Dyke uncharacteristically blew a gasket when he charged into Leroy Sane to give away a penalty. Dejan Lovren was also lucky not to have given away two penalties as Liverpool looked more jittery than I have seen them for some time.
“Gomez, meanwhile, looked as safe as houses. Whether this young man plays in the centre of defence or as a full-back he is an outstanding defender and one you can rely upon.”
Gomez was decent at right-back, but he had some shaky moments himself and is undoubtedly happier in the middle.

It’ll be interesting to see if Jurgen Klopp sticks with the new-look back four after the international break, or if Trent Alexander-Arnold will get his spot back.
In fairness, the man who turned 20 yesterday did look tired against Napoli midweek and will likely benefit from a short break, but the Gomez/van Dijk partnership was something we were getting very excited about.
Even when Lovren plays well, he’s still got a mistake in the locker.
