Key injury to Liverpool starter means two players need to step up

Liverpool’s no.7 James Milner limped off the field against Manchester City on Sunday, and it looks like our oldest player will sadly be unavailable for a decent period of time.

The Daily Telegraph predict a comeback around November, which will see Milner miss games against Huddersfield, Red Star and Cardiff, and potentially the Arsenal clash on November 3, too.

As it’s a hamstring problem though, Milner is actually not going to be out for as long as could have been expected, so for that, we’re grateful.

We have a two week break now due to internationals, but when the squad returns, two midfielders need to start showing us what they can do.

Naby Keita and Fabinho arrived for almost £100m in the summer, but the former has been in and out the side and the latter an almost permanent substitute.

Milner’s injury means that one of these will need to start, as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is still many months away from a possible return and Adam Lallana is simply unable to get match fit.

Keita needs to demand the ball more and show ambition to drive through midfield, which is when chances get created. Fabinho needs to get up to the speed of English football, especially in the difficult no.6 position that requires so much discipline and reading of what others are doing.

Hopefully, Milner’s injury will allow one of our new signings the opportunity to flourish.
