The latest fitness update on Salah and Van Dijk ahead of Huddersfield clash

Posted by

Liverpool are set for a nervous wait on the fitness of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk as they prepare to face Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

The pair will be monitored throughout the week after suffering injuries whilst on international duty with Egypt and the Netherlands, respectively.

Salah was forced off with a muscle strain in the second half of Friday’s 4-1 win over Swaziland and subsequently ruled out of Tuesday’s return fixture.

Van Dijk made it through the entire 90 minutes of his side’s 3-0 win over Germany on Saturday, in which he scored, but has since withdrawn from the squad to face Belgium having aggravated his recent rib injury.

Both will return to Merseyside on Monday for further examination, but are unlikely to find out if they will be fit to face Huddersfield until the end of the week, reports the Telegraph’s Chris Bascombe.

Salah is unlikely to be risked if not fully fit by the weekend, with Jurgen Klopp having already been tipped to rotate after the Reds’ fatigued performance against Manchester City.

Dejan Lovren’s encouraging performance against Pep Guardiola’s men will have also eased fears over the potential short-term absence of Van Dijk.

The Dutchman is seemingly less of concern having only missed Liverpool’s League Cup defeat to Chelsea after sustaining his initial rib problem during last month’s 3-0 win over Southampton.

Klopp will, however, be even more keen to see Joe Gomez emerge unscathed from England’s UEFA Nations League clash with Spain after it was recently announced he would be starting for the Three Lions.

James Milner is meanwhile expected to miss the visit to the John Smith’s Stadium following his hamstring injury, although Liverpool will be boosted by the return of Adam Lallana from his lengthy spell on the sidelines.
