Trying to guess who Jurgen Klopp will pick on Saturday evening is perhaps more difficult than for any other match this season…
Liverpool take on David Wagner’s Huddersfield and despite being away from home, enter the match as heavy favourites. If you think the Reds are worth a flutter, try a bet365 bonus code and boost your odds.
During the international break, Virgil van Dijk, Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Naby Keita all returned to Melwood with various injuries – and there’s no definitive word on whether the quartet will be fully fit.
On top of that, James Milner is only nearing a return, while the likes of Adam Lallana, Joel Matip and Daniel Sturridge have enjoyed two weeks of solid training at Melwood and could therefore be in contention.
At the back, it’s a little easier to predict.
Alisson, barring a late injury, will 100% begin in goal, with Simon Mignolet, who actually got minutes for Belgium against Holland, on the bench.
Andrew Robertson is another automatic starter and will be named on the left of Klopp’s traditional back four.
Alberto Moreno has barely featured this term, but he’s a liability and will only play if the captain of Scotland is unavailable.
At right-back, Klopp will either deploy Trent Alexander-Arnold or Joe Gomez, like he did for the crunch game versus Manchester City.
We have a feel that against Huddersfield, where we’ll be expected to dominate possession and attack, Klopp will pick Trent – who is a better passer of the ball in the final third.
This will allow Gomez to play in his favoured position at centre-back alongside our player of the season so far Virgil van Dijk. As a result, Dejan Lovren will likely man the bench.
Jordan Henderson will begin as our holding midfielder, with Gini Wijnaldum a definite choice for one of the no.8 roles alongside him. We reckon that Lallana may actually get his first start of the season in the other midfield spot, due to Milner and Keita both struggling with hamstring issues. Fabinho is another option, but arguably not required if we’re already fielding defensively minded midfielders.
Up top, a broken thumb shouldn’t keep Sadio Mane out and the Senegalese should begin on the left. Roberto Firmino is out of form but an automatic starter for Klopp centrally. On the right, we can see Xherdan Shaqiri starting ahead of Mo Salah, who probably needs the rest after leaving Egypt duty with a groin strain.
Predicted starting XI: Alisson; Trent, Robertson, van Dijk, Gomez; Henderson, Wijnaldum, Lallana; Shaqiri, Mane, Firmino
