Arsenal plotting surprise deal for Liverpool star – report

Arsenal are reportedly preparing to pounce on Alberto Moreno following the news of his likely summer departure at Liverpool.

The left-back is expected to leave the club when his current deal expires next year, with contract negotiations having evidently broken down.

This would mean the Reds potentially losing another player on a free following Emre Can’s move to Juventus in the previous transfer window.

Gunners manager Unai Emery, who is a fan of Moreno after their time together at Sevilla, is considering the Liverpool man as a cut-price backup for Nacho Monreal, reports the Mirror’s David Maddock.

The 26-year-old has already been tipped as a possible target for Barcelona amid the club’s ongoing contract dispute with Jordi Alba.

Moreno has seen his first-team opportunities limited at Anfield since suffering an injury in the Champions League last December.

His spell on the sidelines cut short his surprise resurgence and handed Andrew Robertson an opportunity to stake a claim for an extended run in the side.

The Scotland captain has since been instrumental to the Reds’ defensive improvement and displayed no signs of loosening his grip on the starting left-back spot.

An Anfield exit for Moreno would now seemingly pave the way for 18-year-old Adam Lewis to vie for first-team involvement as a reward for his sparkling form with the U23s.

The teenager was a standout figure for Steven Gerrard’s U18s last season and has already established himself as a prominent figure under Neil Critchley over the opening months of the Premier League 2 campaign.
