Liverpool handed fantastic injury news ahead of Red Star clash

Sadio Mane is set to hand Liverpool a timely boost ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League meeting with Red Star Belgrade.

The forward was absent for Saturday’s 1-0 win over Huddersfield after breaking his thumb whilst on duty with Senegal during the international break.

Mane had undergone successful surgery on the problem earlier in the week, but a late decision saw Liverpool deem it wise to omit him from the squad.

Liverpool’s no.10 returned to training on Monday and is now available for selection in midweek, according to Goal.com’s Neil Jones.

Liverpool’s attacking positions are seemingly all to play for at the moment in light of the club’s recent struggles in front of goal.

Though Mane has been far from his explosive best of late, his pace and directness have proven to be valuable weapons against foreign sides in Europe.

For Jurgen Klopp to have him at his disposal again is a welcomed lift as the Reds strive to rediscover the swift transition from defence to attack that so often disjointed opposition defences last season.

Mane’s relatively unrivalled speed as a ball carrier makes him key in this respect, especially as Liverpool work to compensate for a lack of midfield creativity.

Klopp has the freedom of throwing him straight back in for Wednesday’s must-win contest, knowing he has Xherdan Shaqiri ready to start in the Premier League clash at home to Cardiff City three days later.
