Klopp: Why I’ve stopped Liverpool’s high-press…

A lot of Liverpool fans have been disappointed to not see a rampant high-press orchestrated by the team this season.

We can remember it against PSG in the opening 20 minutes, but bar that game our approach has been much more considered.

In the Premier League, it’s worked, with Liverpool currently on seven wins and two draws from nine games, which sees us joint top of the table with Manchester City, only behind on goal difference.

But our football has undoubtedly been less pleasing on the eye, with less energy off the ball and less creativity on it.

According to Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s actions (or lack thereof) off the ball have been very much considered, as our famous high-press was often negated by teams who just played long.

“Last year, our big strength was high pressing, and then when the opponents didn’t play football, it was like, ‘sorry’,” Klopp told the Telegraph.

“Our midfield press wasn’t our problem against Huddersfield, though. Our problem was only that when we had the ball, we could have done better,” Klopp continued.

“You cannot win only with offensive football, it’s not possible. Because you are open and the pitch was too big for that.

“You need to be organised and, on the other side, you need to create. I would love to see us do that a little bit better.”

It would have been nice to see us go for the jugular against Manchester City, another side like PSG who always play football, but we still picked up a decent draw in that game which keeps us in the running.

At Anfield, we’d like to see Liverpool try to blitz teams early on, as once we take a lead, we’ve proven in the past that we’re lethal on the counter.

Having said that, we’re not really in a position to complain considering our league position!

Once the attacking spark improves, we could do some serious damage, while remaining solid at the back.
