Fabinho provided fans with the first real insight into the defensive ferocity he is capable of supplying at Liverpool during Wednesday’s Champions League win over Red Star Belgrade.

The summer signing was handed a long-awaited start in the 4-0 victory having spent the early months of his time on Merseyside adjusting to a change in intensity behind-the-scenes.

Jurgen Klopp has refrained from rushing the Brazilian into a new system as a means of granting him the smoothest integration possible.

Wednesday served as early evidence of that approach paying dividends, with the former Monaco man producing a commanding display at the base of the Reds’ midfield three.

It was for his athleticism across the pitch and his intelligent positioning that Red Star were granted little room to manoeuvre as they sought to leave their own attacking stamp on the game.

 

Besides winning 18 of his 24 duels and making nine tackles, 25-year-old also completed 20 passes in the final-third to demonstrate both his ability to drive forward and effectively use the ball upon winning it back.
