Robertson speaks in detail about Liverpool’s Captain pecking order

Andrew Robertson is one of a number of Liverpool players who captain their countries.

Virgil van Dijk is Holland skipper, Jordan Henderson is England’s vice-captain, Naby Keita is Guinea captain, while Sadio Mane is vice-captain for Senegal.

As a result, we have a plethora of leaders in and around the first-team.

Jurgen Klopp recently explained how a club vote led to van Dijk taking the armband when either Henderson or James Milner are not in the starting XI and Robbo has expanded on the current situation.

“Obviously I’m the better captain,” joked Robertson during a very interesting interview with Chris Bascombe of the Telegraph.

“No, Virgil took the armband when Hendo and James were out, and rightly so. I voted for him. He is a leader. He was captain at Southampton and captain for his country. He has that presence.

“It works in our favour because you need more than one captain on the pitch. Gone are the days of ten or 15 years ago when maybe it was a Roy Keane or Steven Gerrard who led everyone. Now it is more of a leadership group and that shows on the pitch. Obviously when Hendo is fit he is our captain, but there are others who will shout instructions, too.

“I’m maybe not so vocal with Liverpool as I am with Scotland,” he continued.

“Maybe I will work on that, but we all get each other up for the games and if anything needs to be said, it gets said. It is something I am growing into with Scotland.”

Henderson is injured for the Arsenal clash on Saturday evening, but Milner is likely to be in the side, so he’ll wear the armband.

It’s been quite nice seeing van Dijk lead us out in all honesty. He’s such a brilliant leader and marshals the entire side from the back – but Hendo and Milner have been loyal servants and it could cause unrest if their captaincy was removed.

Provided Liverpool keep winning, we couldn’t care less – and as mentioned in the introduction – are just happy there’s some many players in the team capable of standing up and being counted.
