Over the past week there have been a number of reports claiming Liverpool will offer Andy Robertson bumper new terms.
These, according to James Pearce of the Echo, are false – with the Reds currently having no plans to extend the Scot’s deal – despite an internal belief that he’s the short and long-term option for the left-back role.
Robertson has three and a half years left and there’s no urgency to renew.
Interestingly, Liverpool have released this information to journalists so it doesn’t look like Robbo is stalling or refusing to put pen to paper (like Sadio Mane and his agents are), as there simply isn’t a contract on the table to sign…
The club is therefore ensuring his brilliant reputation is maintained among supporters, with Pearce telling fans that the 24-year-old’s deal includes plenty of incentives anyway – meaning he’s been financially rewarded for his development and role as a key player in the side already.
We couldn’t be happier with Robbo, who is one of the first names on Jurgen Klopp’s team-sheet and arguably our most consistent performer. Nobody in red has assisted more goals for the team this season either (6).
Robertson’s backup Alberto Moreno won’t be offered a contract this season either, but his deal expires in the summer of 2019.
As a result, it looks certain that the Spaniard will depart, meaning Liverpool could either enter the market for another or blood Adam Lewis into the role.
Personally, we’d love Liverpool to move for Ryan Sessegnon, who can play at left-back or more advanced in support of the attackers.
