Cardiff City prioritising January deal for Liverpool star – Klopp open to transfer

Cardiff City could turn to Nathaniel Clyne in their efforts to sign a right-back when the transfer window re-opens in January.

Clyne has grown to be something of a peripheral figure on Merseyside having missed much of last season due to a long-term back injury.

Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold shared the workload in his absence, with the latter eventually asserting himself as a regular starter under Jurgen Klopp.

Such has been the 20-year-old’s impact that Clyne has been limited to just one senior appearance so far this term, coming in September’s 2-1 League Cup defeat at home to Chelsea.

Neil Warnock is now eyeing the defender as a priority mid-season loan target as he looks for a solution to his side’s fitness problems at the back, according to Wales Online.

Injury setbacks for Lee Peltier and Jazz Richards have resigned Cardiff to shifting centre-back Bruno Manga into an unfamiliar full-back role.

Clyne now represents an orthodox and highly-experienced option for the 18th-placed Bluebirds as they look to evade a relegation scrap.

It also reported that Klopp himself would be open to the Englishman leaving on a temporary deal upon the turn of the year, with Gomez having already proven to be a reliable backup to Alexander-Arnold when necessary this season.

Cardiff will feel they stand a realistic chance of landing the 27-year-old having previously accommodated Marko Grujic during the 2017/2018 campaign.

From one possible departure to another, Liverpool look set to rebuff any offers that come in for Simon Mignolet in January as they look to retain his services at least until the end of the season.
