Liverpool receive green light to table Christian Pulisic bid – but there’s twist

Liverpool will have the opportunity to agree a deal for Borussia Dortmund’s Christian Pulisic when the transfer window re-opens in January.

The USA international looks set to leave the Bundesliga leaders in 2019, with negotiations over an extension having broken down.

Dortmund face having to sell the 20-year-old on for a fee in order to avoid losing him for nothing upon the expiry of his current contract in 2020.

The Reds have unsurprisingly emerged as leading contenders thanks to Jurgen Klopp’s ties with Pulisic from their brief time together at Dortmund. Liverpool do, however, also face stiff competition from Premier League title rivals Chelsea as they look to cover their backs in preparation for a potential Eden Hazard departure.

Dortmund will be open to agreeing a £70million deal with one of Liverpool or Chelsea in January, but on the condition that Pulisic stays put until the end of the season, reports the Telegraph’s Matt Law.

Pulisic has spoken fondly off Klopp in the past in thanks to the manager for handing him his first senior training session at Dortmund.

The Liverpool boss acted on his own admiration for the forward in 2016 when he tried to sign Pulisic for £11million amid his emergence as one of Europe’s most exciting prospects.

Multiple individual records and 107 appearances later and Pulisic is now valued at £70million, not to mention deemed a possible long-term replacement for Philippe Coutinho.

Chelsea’s desire to wrap up a deal in January may stem from their fear of a transfer ban following a FIFA investigation into their signing of foreign U18 players.

It also now puts the onus on Klopp to make his move if he remains to be keen on luring Pulisic to Anfield.

Pulisic has managed just 13 appearances across all competitions so far this season having seen his opportunities limited by the form of Jadon Sancho and Jacob Bruun Larsen. This has notably seen him start on the bench for each of his side’s last five league games.
