Explained: Why LFC don’t necessarily need to beat Napoli by two to progress

Liverpool’s defeat to PSG means they must beat Napoli on the final day of the group – but not necessarily by two goals, as has been suggested by some.

If the Reds win by one goal to nil, they would go through by virtue of having scored more goals than Napoli in the group overall. It would come down to that because the two sides would have the same head-to-head and the same goal difference in that scenario.

Any other one-goal margin of victory other than 1-0 would not be sufficient for the Reds, as Napoli would have scored more away goals against Liverpool than vice-versa in that case (the game in Naples finished 1-0 to Napoli).

A win of any kind by two or more goals at Anfield on December 11 would see the Reds go through.

We absolutely do not want to be in the Europa League after Christmas – so it could be a special European night coming up.
