Fabinho, Shaqiri and Clyne: How the Reds should line up at Wolves

Posted by

Liverpool will be top of the table on Christmas Day with a win over Wolves at Molyneux on Friday night – and can also open up a four-point gap to Manchester City in second place ahead of their game against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Every game is a must-win at the moment with the Reds knowing how valuable it would be to be top by January 3 when we face a trip to the Etihad Stadium.

Alisson will start in goal against Wolves, with Virgil van Dijk and Dejan Lovren ahead of him as the only fit centre-backs. Andy Robertson will be at left-back.

At right-back, there is a debate to be had over whether Nathaniel Clyne can play again, with James Milner now back in full training and another full-back option. After his excellent performance against Manchester United, however, Clyne deserves the chance to play again if he can manage it.

Fabinho should also retain his place having been the best player on the Anfield pitch last Sunday, with Gini Wijnaldum likely to be alongside him in a two-man central midfield.

Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino must play, and Xherdan Shaqiri deserves a start after his heroics against United. That would mean leaving Naby Keita out, but he can play at home to Newcastle on Boxing Day; captain Jordan Henderson is also better suited to the Magpies game.

More changes to the line-up are expected against Newcastle, with Daniel Sturridge and Alberto Moreno potential starters to give others a breather, but this line-up against Wolves should be enough to yield the three points.
