James Pearce says LFC could make dramatic formation switch

Liverpool could switch from a flat-back four to a 3-4-3, with Fabinho playing in defence, according to respected correspondent James Pearce.

Fowler: What Salah must do to reach legendary status

The journalist made the claim in the Echo following Jurgen Klopp’s press-conference ahead of tonight’s clash with Wolves.

“We may have to think about other options like three at the back with two midfielders or stuff like that,” he began.

“If something else happens we would have to do something like that. When I saw the Southampton v Arsenal line-ups I saw Arsenal are already in a situation where they have to make these changes.

“It’s just the situation and the job to do. If we can keep them fit it’s very important but who knows?”

The theory is that Fabinho, Nathaniel Clyne or Gini Wijnaldum could form a three-man defence alongside one of Virgil van Dijk or Dejan Lovren – should our only two fit centre-backs require time out over the festive season.

Wijnaldum played in the back-three against Brighton last season, and Fabinho has experience of playing in defence for both Real Madrid and Brazil, although in all honesty, we’d prefer to stick with our winning formulae.

We are expecting heavy rotation in the coming matches though and just we can maintain our winning streak. Tonight v Wolves, we hope Klopp goes full strength, then rests a few v Newcastle on Boxing Day, before going all out against Arsenal and Manchester City…

Get through those, and we’ll really start dreaming!
