Lovren outlines how the Reds have come a long way in the last two seasons

Dejan Lovren says two years or so ago, Liverpool would not have got over the line in their game with Wolves on Friday night – citing an improvement in maturity as the reason why they did.

The defender, who gave an interview last week in which he said the Reds were hoping to go unbeaten this season like Arsenal have done before, explained that he feels his teammates have come a long way in the last few months, with new signings such as Virgil van Dijk and Alisson instrumental.

The way that the Reds play now is completely different to when Jurgen Klopp first took charge – and we are reaping the benefits.

Lovren told LiverpoolFC.com: “It was a tough game but we showed our quality and our experience.

“I’m sure if we had played a couple of seasons ago here we would have struggled. We have learned from these previous seasons how to play these difficult games and we did it quite well.

“In some difficult times we kept the ball and sometimes we showed, like the boss said, this matureness and this readiness again when we lose the ball to be there and to stay hungry to the end of the game because we know what we are playing for.

“It’s the three points and this is all that matters.”

Having the patience and resilience to win games over the course of 90 minutes, rather than attempt to blitz teams as we have done in the past, leaving ourselves susceptible at the back, is the sign of a maturing and improving team.

Already confirmed as being top at Christmas, this team could be on the verge of doing something very special.

Defensively, we have reached a level that no Reds fan could even have dreamt of this time last year – the rapid increase in stability over such a short space of time is remarkable.
