Pundit: “Ominous” Reds can definitely win the title

Former Reds striker Michael Owen says Liverpool have a great opportunity to win the Premier League this season, largely due to an imperious defence.

Having kept 11 clean sheets so far this season, a stunning total after 18 games, the improvement at the back has been nothing short of remarkable.

Join that with an attack that has started to click into gear, and that could be a winning combination, as Owen explained.

Via the Premier League’s official website, he said: “You can look at [Daniel] Sturridge, [Raheem] Sterling and [Luis] Suarez, and say, ‘Who’s the best?’ – those three, or [Sadio] Mane, [Mohamed] Salah and [Roberto] Firmino? You can debate it all night long.

“But the facts of the matter are, their defence now, they don’t ever look like conceding. Brilliant goalkeeper, brilliant back four, protection in front of that back four. They’re looking ominous.”

Owen is spot on in terms of the defence – Virgil van Dijk and Alisson, in particular, have been massively important in shoring that area of the pitch up.

Title-winning sides not only need to score goals, but must be tight at the back, and the Reds certainly are at the moment – and will be for the foreseeable future.

Being top at Christmas is an excellent achievement, but it means nothing if that form does not continue, though. Hopefully, we’re still looking ominous at the start of May.
