Chelsea eyeing £53m captain in January – could benefit Liverpool’s transfer plans

Chelsea have identified Nabil Fekir as a leading January transfer target as they seek to bolster their attacking ranks.

The Lyon captain came agonisingly close to sealing a move to Liverpool in the summer following the agreement of personal terms and a £53million fee.

His proposed switch to Anfield was eventually scuppered in the eleventh hour when the Reds withdrew from negotiations due to concerns over an underlying knee problem detected in his medical.

Liverpool have since shown no interest in reigniting a deal for the Frenchman, thereby paving the way for both Chelsea and Real Madrid to emerge as potential suitors.

The Blues are now keen to pay slightly less than his original £53million valuation, according to the Telegraph’s Matt Law.

Their interest could meanwhile prove a bump in their efforts to beat Liverpool to the signing of Christian Pulisic from Borussia Dortmund.

The USA international is expected to leave the German club in 2019 after talks over a contract extension evidently broke down.

Pulisic is reportedly favouring a move to Merseyside due to the opportunity to work under Jurgen Klopp and the greater likelihood of regular minutes. With the latter in mind, Chelsea’s pursuit of Fekir may prove a significant deterrent.

Dortmund are supposedly prepared to agree a £70million deal for the forward in January, but on the condition that he remains at the club until the end of the season.
