Liverpool gifted major injury boost – key defender already back in training

Jurgen Klopp is set to have Trent Alexander-Arnold at his disposal again when Liverpool face Newcastle on Boxing Day.

The right-back has been sidelined since hobbling off with an ankle injury in the 90th minute of the 1-0 Champions League group stage win over Napoli earlier this month.

Nathaniel Clyne and James Milner have shared the workload impressively in his absence, with the former making his first Premier League appearance of the season in the 3-1 victory over Manchester United.

Alexander-Arnold has now returned to Liverpool training and is likely to be available for selection on Wednesday, according to the Liverpool Echo.

An injury setback arrived at a cruel time for the 20-year-old on the back of a superb November, for which he was voted the Standard Chartered Player of the Month thanks to two clean sheets, an assist against Fulham and a stunning free-kick against Watford.

It also capped a barrage of defensive injuries for the Reds after Joe Gomez (fractured leg) and Joel Matip (fractured collarbone) were ruled out for up to six weeks.

For Clyne and Milner to fare so well in his brief absence has been testament to not only Klopp’s strength in depth, but also the versatility he boasts throughout his squad.

With that in mind, it may well be that Clyne starts against Rafael Benitez’s men as a means of granting Alexander-Arnold an extended rest period.
