Dejan Lovren’s hilarious, modest reaction to his Newcastle wonderstrike

Dejan Lovren’s wondergoal for Liverpool against Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle United was an incredible moment to watch, and it was as unexpected for him as it was for everyone else.

Lovren celebrated wildly, understandably so, as he netted for the first time this season. His strike was important in sending the Reds off towards the three points and was struck with superb technique.

After the game, the Croatian joked that when he normally shoots, it ends up nowhere near the target – so maybe he was due one going into the top corner! He’s not always known for being modest but was self-deprecating this time around.

Via LiverpoolFC.com, Lovren joked: “Usually, it’s a ball to kick into the stand!

“It was quite difficult to catch the ball, to be honest. Usually, it’s a ball to kick into the stand, like defending a set-piece for me.

“But luckily enough, I did it, I scored! It’s always great to score for Liverpool and hopefully, we can do it again in the next couple of games because we need everyone now.”

Lovren was exceptional at the back for the Reds against an admittedly limited Newcastle attack, as he will have to be in the coming games as we look to cement a title challenge.

If he keeps scoring goals like that, perhaps the ‘best defender in the world’ tag might be warranted full-time!
