‘No agreement reached’ – defender opens up on potential January move

Alberto Moreno admits his future is yet to have been decided amid speculation linking him to an Anfield exit in the January transfer window.

The left-back has been tipped to leave the club in 2019 having seen his first team opportunities severely limited by the unwavering form of Andrew Robertson.

Moreno could leave on a free transfer upon the expiry of his current contract in June if the Reds opt to retain him beyond the mid-season window as opposed to selling him on for a fee.

With negotiations having evidently proven unsuccessful, Moreno looks set to bring his time on Merseyside to an end.

Discussing his future, he told El Transistor: “Liverpool has proposed renewing me but no agreement has been reached, in January the market opens and we will see.”

“To this day we have nothing closed neither with Liverpool nor with other clubs.”

Moreno signed for the Reds from Sevilla for £12million in 2014 but has since struggled to hold down a spot as starting left-back.

The Spaniard’s poor start to the 2016/2017 campaign saw him lose his place to James Milner, who excelled as a make-shift defender for much of the season.

Having looked likely to leave that summer, Moreno launched an admirable comeback in pre-season to convince Klopp to retain his services. An impressive start to 2017/2018 later limited new arrival Robertson to a role as understudy, until his form was cut short by injury in December.

The Scotland captain has since cemented his place in the Reds’ starting eleven, whilst U23s star Adam Lewis has asserted himself as a potential future heir.

Moreno’s availability on a free would grant him the ability to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club following the turn of the year.
