Pundit: Why Reds shouldn’t sign anyone in January

Tim Sherwood says Liverpool should NOT sign anyone in January, because it might disrupt the team’s harmony.

With the Reds six points clear at the top of the Premier League table, many fans would like to see Jurgen Klopp strengthen even further to cement that place, but Sherwood has warned that might not have the desired effect.

Via Sky Sports, he said: “It’s really dangerous for people to think they need to add extra players. You can change the whole dynamic of your dressing room by doing that. They are in this position and I wouldn’t sign another player.

“Newcastle did it with Faustino Asprilla [in 1996] and it was a disaster. We know what a good player he was, he almost changed the dynamics of how they played, but it didn’t work out. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Sherwood makes a good point, but the counter is that Liverpool tried and failed to sign Yevhen Konoplyanka in January 2014, and ended up losing the title battle – having that extra option could have been crucial.

If someone who the club have been watching for a while becomes available – Christian Pulisic, for instance – it’s likely that Michael Edwards and Jurgen Klopp will decide to make a move, but the chances of that happening are perhaps slim.

January is not always the best month to get value from transfers, which is what the Reds will understandably want. Arrivals or not, Liverpool are in a great position ahead of the second half of the season.
