Emery: Why I turned down Mo Salah at PSG

Arsenal boss Unai Emery didn’t sign Mo Salah when he as at PSG as he was worried the Egyptian had a big enough mentality to join an elite side.

The Spaniard was speaking ahead of Arsenal’s trip to Anfield this evening, where Liverpool are looking to affirm our position at the top of the Premier League table.

Salah has 12 goals in the top flight this term, just one less than the current leader in the race for the Golden Boot, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who will spearhead tonight’s opponents.

“We spoke about the possibility to sign Salah to Paris Saint-Germain when he was playing at Roma,” Emery told Sky Sports.

“We had some doubts – and then he signed for Liverpool and these doubts he has broken at Liverpool. Now, if you are speaking about the five top players in the world, one is Salah.

“Can he take the performance into one big team?” he replied when asked about the specific doubts.

The quotes go a long way in explaining how much Salah has improved since signing for us.

There is now not a single team in world football for whom he’d not be an automatic starter – but Salah belongs to Liverpool and that’s how it’s going to stay.

The 26-year-old recently signed a big contract extension and it would take way more than the £200m PSG signed Neymar for to persuade us to sell.

No club is going to spend that and we truly believe the player is happy on Merseyside, where the people adore him.

So long may it continue!
