Two Reds stars shortlisted for prestigious award

Mo Salah and Sadio Mane have both been nominated for the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Player of the Year award for 2018.

Just like the 2017 edition of the award, they are joined by Arsenal’s Pierre Emerick Aubameyang on the three-man shortlist, with the likes of Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez and Juventus’ Medhi Benatia missing out.

Salah is the favourite to win the award, and having won it last time too, he could be the first player since Yaya Toure to retain it for successive years.

The Premier League’s leading goal scorer had many memorable moments in 2018, from his goals in the Champions League against Manchester City and Roma to picking up the PFA Player of the Year award and proving those who dubbed him a ‘one-season wonder’ wrong with a good start to the 2018-19 season.

Mane, meanwhile, who has eight league goals and one assist this season, has not won the award before. Aubamenyang won in 2015 when he was still at Borussia Dortmund.

The winner will be announced next Tuesday (January 8) at a ceremony in Senegal.
