Respected Liverpool correspondent Paul Joyce has predicted that Jurgen Klopp will field a ‘safe’ XI this evening against Manchester City, in what’s set to be the biggest game of the domestic season so far.
You can get the Reds at 3/1 for the victory, which considering they’ve yet to lose this season seems like fairly good bet!
Mo Salah is Liverpool’s favourite to be first goalscorer, which although a seemingly sensible bet, should potentially be avoided as the Egyptian has struggled against big teams this term.
We’d maybe suggest Roberto Firmino, who has a very good record v Manchester City and is coming on the back of a hat-trick, is a good bet as a Liverpool scorer v City.
Joyce writes in the Times that Klopp will pick last season’s three-man midfield of Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum and James Milner, rather than any of the three summer signings, Fabinho, Naby Keita or Xherdan Shaqiri:
Joyce’s predicted XI: Alisson; Trent, Robbo, VVD, Lovren; Hendo, Milner, Gini; Mane, Salah, Firmino
Earlier in the campaign this may have frustrated us, but we’ve learned to simply trust what the boss is doing.
Shaq provides littles defensive cover, while Milner is often superb in big, frenetic games, so we can understand the decision.
Henderson has also played well recently, so starting the skipper ahead of Fabinho is equally understandable, although the Brazilian has been largely good too.
Obviously, Joyce may have got it wrong and Klopp might decide to field a more adventurous lineup.
A win will see us go ten points clear of Pep Guardiola’s side, but a draw would still us hold a seven point lead of both City and Spurs after 21 games.
