Crazy Solanke stat emerges from £19m transfer

Only two English strikers have ever cost more money than Dom Solanke, following his £19m sale to Bournemouth.

They are Andy Carroll, who infamously cost Liverpool £35m from Newcastle after we sold Fernando Torres, and Wayne Rooney, whose £30m transfer to Manchester United back in 2004 was actually a heck of a lot of money at the time – but obviously proved worth it.

Solanke has scored just one Premier League goal, which came on the final day of last season, and hasn’t played a minute of football for Liverpool this term.

So for us to collect such a large transfer fee from a club who previously paid £6m for Brad Smith and £15m for Jordon Ibe is undeniably exceptional business from our sporting director Michael Edwards.

We wish Solanke all the best and hope he goes on to have a good career, but the reality is that he wouldn’t have been involved in the title race and unless he improved dramatically, wouldn’t have been given the minutes he requires to fulfil his potential.
