Dejan Lovren, who has come in for a fair bit of stick for his performance against Manchester City, has explained the scenes in the dressing-room following the 2-1 defeat.

Goals from Sergio Aguero and Leroy Sane either side of a Roberto Firmino header saw City cut the gap to four points, but the key is that Liverpool are still top of the Premier League table and in the driving seat.

Lovren has reiterated this message and suggested that atmosphere post-match was fairly calm.

“The message (in the dressing room afterwards) was to stay calm,” Lovren told the Echo.

“There are many games in front of us, and we knew it was a big season and we are still first. Nothing changed.

“We need to stay calm, keep our focus game by game and do not look back. When we win or we lose, we will not look back.

“People already questioned us even before the season, even now they said this game was already the title. It doesn’t work in football like that. It is game by game, let us see at the end of the season where we will finish.”

Lovren could have done better for Aguero’s opener, but at the end of the day, it was a world-class strike from a brilliant player.

There were some shaky moments, but it’s just about the only game this campaign where one of our central defenders hasn’t been exceptional.

Joe Gomez and Joel Matip will soon return to full training and we’re not at all worried about our options at the back until the summer.
