Merson makes controversial claim about Liverpool’s FA Cup game

Paul Merson thinks Liverpool should do everything they can to lose the FA Cup fixture with Wolves on Monday night.

The former Arsenal star reckons because of our ambitions of winning the Premier League, the world’s oldest cup competition will only be a distraction and not a basket we should be putting any eggs in.

“Liverpool need to go out of the FA Cup as quickly as possible if they want to win the league, so their game at Wolves on Monday could be one to watch,” he wrote in his column for the Star.

“I hope Wolves take it seriously and don’t send out the reserves.

“They’re at home and they’re not in relegation trouble so they should have a go.”

It’s undeniable that Jurgen Klopp will select a highly rotated XI, with the likes of Divock Origi, Simon Mignolet and Alberto Moreno practical certainties to start.

But to suggest we actually want to lose is perhaps going a bit far.

After all, Klopp is consistently criticised by outsiders for not winning a trophy as Liverpool manager – and despite the fact we’re still in the Champions League and competing for the title – the FA Cup does represent an opportunity to lift this weight hanging around the manager’s neck.

We do agree however that the priority is that none of our regular starters pick up injuries and we get back to winning ways against Brighton in the PL following the Wolves clash.
