Reds midfielder linked with summer exit – on one condition

James Milner could be set for a summer exit from Liverpool – as long as Leeds United are promoted.

According to the Lancashire Post, reports suggest Milner will seek a move to the team he started his career at if they reach the Premier League this season.

Leeds have not been in the Premier League since 2004 but are currently top of the Championship, two points ahead of Norwich in second and four clear of the play-off spots.

Milner made his senior debut at the age of 16 for Leeds but signed for Newcastle United once they were relegated.

Now 33, he has become an important part of the Liverpool squad, providing experience in the middle of the pitch, but it is understandable that he would want to go back to the area of the country he grew up in to end his career.

Milner’s Liverpool contract expires in the summer of 2020, so there is a chance he could have one more season at the top even if Leeds come up.

He is, though, entering the latter period of an excellent career in the game, and he will want to play as much as possible – something that might not be forthcoming if he stays with the Reds.
