Alisson: Why I rejected Chelsea for Liverpool

Liverpool’s best bit of business last summer, by some distance, was acquiring Alisson from AS Roma.

Fabinho has done well, Xherdan Shaqiri proved an insane bargain and Naby Keita has potential, but Alisson is the player who’s transformed us into genuine title challengers.

For us, he’s the best goalkeeper in the world.

But in 2018, it was no formality that we’d secure his signature, with other top clubs continually linked to his services.

Jurgen Klopp however was adamant that it was ‘Alisson or nobody,’ and Liverpool broke the world record to make the Brazilian the most expensive keeper in history.

Chelsea quickly broke that when bringing Kepa to Stamford Bridge, but wouldn’t have needed to if they got Alisson originally.

For the 26-year-old though, it was an easy decision.

“I chose Liverpool for the same reasons I went to Roma when I first left Brazil – I thought this would be the best move for my career,” he told FourFourTwo.

“Chelsea were changing their manager and not playing in the Champions League.

“I’ve also always admired Liverpool’s history. This is a club with five European Cups in their trophy cabinet. I really wanted to be part of that history.

“I came very close to winning the competition with Roma and I’m working hard to make it happen now with Liverpool. What’s life if not fighting for your dreams? I dream of winning the Champions League.”

In 2017, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain rejected Chelsea, despite the fact they were offering much bigger wages than us, while the Blues were keen on Virgil van Dijk as well.

The fact we can consistently beat them to targets proves the lure of Jurgen Klopp and how far our club has come.

Now, we have to translate our superb squad into trophies, preferably the Premier League, starting this term!
