Liverpool receive boost in race to sign £36million striker

Liverpool will seemingly be greeted by a clearer path if they do pursue the signing of Timo Werner during the summer transfer window.

The RB Leipzig star has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield in recent weeks, with Jurgen Klopp expected to prioritise the addition of another goalscorer at the end of the season.

Interest from elsewhere in the Bundesliga has, however, loomed as a potential cog in any plans the Reds may have to try and lure the 22-year-old to Merseyside.

Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund both emerged as early suitors, although German outlet Kicker now claim the latter do not consider Werner a target.

The report cites Werner’s lack of tactical compatibility with manager Lucien Favre’s setup as a main reason.

Werner has scored 13 goals in 22 appearances across all competitions so far this season, including 11 in 18 league outings.

He is expected to leave the club in 2019 having reportedly refused Leipzig’s latest contract offer ahead of the expiry of his current deal in 2020.

It is said the German international could be available for around £36million in the summer as the club strives to avoid losing him on a free next year.

Bayern are always strong contenders when it comes to snapping up home-grown talent and look a sure thing to compete for Werner in their bid to refurbish an ageing team later this year.
