James Milner picks his favourite ever European night

James Milner says his favourite European game as a Liverpool player was not last season en route to the Champions League final, but was the famous 4-3 game against Borussia Dortmund in 2016.

Milner got the assist for Dejan Lovren’s last-gasp winner on that particular European night, and he has fond memories of the victory.

Speaking to Graham Hunter, Milner said: “One of the best nights at Anfield – everyone will say City and things like that – was the Dortmund game.

“It was just one of those. We looked down and out. There was no way of coming back. They were a very, very good team. Then you get one goal and then you get a bit of belief in the ground and then the next.

“Obviously, the way we scored the last goal – at the Kop end – the whole roof comes off.”

That Milner did not go for a Champions League game is a slight surprise – there were plenty of good ones to choose from last season – but the Dortmund match will certainly live long in the memory.

It might have been in the Europa League, but it was a game of Champions League quality given how good Dortmund are and how the match panned out.

Next month’s game against Bayern Munich will be another really mouthwatering clash against German opposition. It might just be another classic.
