Honigstein provides Timo Werner to Liverpool update – ESPN

Bundesliga journalist Raphael Honigstein, the man who penned the Jurgen Klopp biography, says there’s an acceptance in Leipzig that Timo Werner is a target for Liverpool.

The attacker has been offered a contract extension that includes a €70m release-clause that a set number of elite clubs – Liverpool included – can trigger at any point.

Werner’s current deal expires in 2020 and Honigstein writes in ESPN that Rb Leipzig will look to cash in this summer should he not put pen to paper.

“His well-published indecision — Leipzig have recently extended a deadline for him to make up his mind: the end of the season — has predictably attracted the attention of a host of European super clubs. Leipzig are working on the assumption that LFC are firmly among his admirers,” he says.

Liverpool sold Dom Solanke earlier this month to Bournemouth; will lose Daniel Sturridge on a Bosman at the end of this campaign and will surely offload Divock Origi as well before next season.

That will be three strikers exiting the club and it will naturally be imperative that a replacement is brought in – even with the acceptance that Rhian Brewster will become involved in the first-team squad.

Werner ticks multiple boxes. He can play anywhere along the frontline, is tactically adept, can finish and young enough to improve. He also plays for a club who will sell – and in Jurgen Klopp – there is no manager a young German would want to play under more.

We think it’ll happen, in short. Let’s hope so, anyway.
