Brendan Rodgers: What Liverpool cannot do in title run-in

Former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has discussed our current season and our ambition to end it as champions.

Rodgers now manages Celtic, but was in charge of our last pursuit of domestic glory, in the 2013/14 campaign.

We couldn’t quite get over the line, for multiple, infamous reasons; and the Northern Irishman eventually departed after a horrible season in 2014/15 – sacked after only a few games of the next one.

Many Reds will scoff at Rogers giving us advice, considering he never won anything, but his comments here are totally fair.

He speaks about how we should ride the wave of the emotion, but not let it engulf us and overcomplicate our football, as it did in 2013/14.

Rodgers told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “It’s another point towards where they want to be, and with 14 games left it’s still a long way out.

“With ten games to go the dynamic changes and then with five to go it changes again.

“It’s just about trying to stay calm and focus on playing well, and if you can do that you get the chance to win.

“I look at it back in 2014, in our last 14 games we actually won 12 of them, drew one and lost one, but we still ended up losing the title.

“It’s a difficult one for Liverpool. It’s an incredible club and the support is amazing, but because it’s been so long the emotion can really affect them.

“So it’s trying to manage that, trying to keep that calmness and use that emotional connection, but also try to ensure you don’t overthink it and just play the game rather than the whole process which is trying to win the league.”

Last night, there was a feeling that the pressure was almost too much. The crowd was tense and quiet, despite the fact there’s still 14 games of the season left!

Manchester City losing put us under more pressure, not less – oddly.

Jurgen Klopp must brush his players down and get them ready for the trip to West Ham on Monday night. Anything less than a win at the London Stadium and we’ll start to worry.
