Liverpool star ruled out of Marbella trip; faces up to six weeks on sidelines

Joe Gomez has been left at home for Liverpool’s warm-weather training camp in Marbella as he continues his rehabilitation.

The defender has been out of action since suffering a fractured leg during the Reds’ 3-1 win over Burnley on December 5.

Having initially been set for six weeks on the sidelines, Gomez’s progress recently hit a setback when he was required to undergo surgery.

He now faces a further four to six weeks out and has therefore remained on Merseyside to continue his recovery, reports the Liverpool Echo’s James Pearce.

Dejan Lovren meanwhile has made the trip after not featuring in five of Liverpool’s six league outings since the turn of the year due to injury.

The Croatian’s availability promises to be key as Liverpool prepare to face Bayern Munich in their Champions League Round of 16 first leg without the suspended Virgil van Dijk.

In more positive news, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has also travelled to Spain as he nears his return from a long-term knee injury.

The midfielder could finally be available for selection again in March having been sidelined since rupturing his cruciate ligaments during last April’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Roma.

18-year-old striker Rhian Brewster is also in the squad amid his recovery from ankle ligament damage sustained back in January 2018.

The full 31-man squad: Fabinho, Van Dijk, Wijnaldum, Lovren, Milner, Keita, Firmino, Mane, Salah, Alisson, Henderson, Sturridge, Moreno, Lallana, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Mignolet, Shaqiri, Brewster, Robertson, Origi, Matip, Phillips, Jones, Hoever, Woodburn, Kelleher, Camacho, Alexander-Arnold, Christie-Davies, Whelan, Lewis.
