Liverpool rivals suffer crushing injury setback one week before key game

Manchester United are likely to be missing Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard when they host Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday February 24.

The duo are set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering muscle injuries as United’s unbeaten run under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came to an end in Tuesday’s 2-0 Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Lingard was replaced by Alexis Sanchez just before half-time after picking up a suspected hamstring injury whilst attempting to launch a counter-attack.

Martial later failed to come out after the interval having received treatment from the club’s medical team on a groin problem earlier in the first half.

Speaking ahead of Monday’s FA Cup fifth round clash with Chelsea, Solskjaer said: “I think they will be out for two to three weeks looking at it now,” per Sky Sports.

To lose the pair against Liverpool would be a monumental blow for Solskjaer given how instrumental they have been in enforcing his counter-attacking approach.

Whilst Lingard has been causing problems with his intelligent movement in the final third, Martial has burdened opposition fullbacks with a nightmare matchup with his pace and directness.

The likes of Sanchez and Juan Mata are obvious solutions, although neither quite offer the same explosive and dynamic threat. Romelu Lukaku is another clear alternative, yet currently finds himself without a goal in his last five Premier League outings.

It puts the onus on Marcus Rashford and Paul Pogba to build on their outstanding form since Solskjaer’s appointment.
