Vital Liverpool star returns to training on Thursday ahead of Bayern Munich clash

Georginio Wijnaldum trained for the first time on Thursday since helping Liverpool to a 3-0 win over Bournemouth at Anfield on Saturday.

The Dutchman has been struggling with illness for well over a week, but was passed fit to re-join his teammates in Marbella.

His return marks a major boost for Jurgen Klopp’s side as they prepare to face Bayern Munich on Merseyside in Tuesday’s Champions League Round of 16 first leg.

Discussing the midfielder, Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com: “Gini didn’t train yet, that’s of course not cool after a very intense game for him.”

“So he had a little dip, but will start today so that’s good.”

Wijnaldum has proven to be a key figure in helping to get the best of out summer signing Fabinho, who has flourished in a system that allows him play beside another no.6.

His availability is even more important given the likelihood of the Brazilian being required to slot in at centre-back in place of the suspended Virgil van Dijk and the injured Dejan Lovren.

It’s for his success alongside the no.3 that may see Klopp lean towards using skipper Jordan Henderson in defence as a means of retaining an increasingly-effective midfield partnership.
