Paul Scholes reckons Liverpool’s rivalry with Manchester United is still the biggest in the country – but interestingly suggests that if we keep competing with Manchester City for top honours – that may eclipse it.
United have traditionally always been our biggest foe – even when we were dominating and they were struggling in the 1980s – but the feud between us and City is undeniably growing.

Their fans have oddly begged a rivalry by chanting about us nearly every game, despite having the privilege of watching their superb side under Pep Guardiola every week. Instead of singing about Kevin de Bruyne, Sergio Aguero and the rest – City fans like to focus on Liverpool losing to Real Madrid in last season’s Champions League Final – despite the fact we knocked them out in quarters!
That being said, we disagree with Scholes. United is easily the game we enjoy winning most and the side whose failure most brings joy to our hearts!
Competitively this season, City is a more important fixture because we’re both going for the title – but they’re realistically a fairly small club who’ve just been financed by multi-billionaires.
We’re happy to admit that United are massive – they were just shambolic under Jose Mourinho.
“I think it’s the biggest rivalry in English football,” Scholes told Sky Sports.
“In a few years, if Man City carry on the way they are going, that [rivalry] might overtake it a little bit.
“You’d expect two Manchester teams to have the biggest rivalry, but I don’t think it is, I think it’s the Liverpool-Man Utd thing, especially with Liverpool trying to get to United’s record of league titles. We don’t want them to do that.
“United vs Liverpool is a big, big game and Liverpool are going really well, so are United. They had a bit of a disappointment against PSG, but hopefully they can redeem themselves tonight [against Chelsea].”
