Carragher: what Liverpool must to do for first time in 2019

Jamie Carragher has challenged Liverpool to make their first real statement in the Premier League title race since the turn of the year.

The Reds face a huge week in their effort to end a 29-year wait for top flight glory, starting with a trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United.

Simply a point will see Jurgen Klopp’s men leapfrog current leaders Manchester City, who face Chelsea in the League Cup final on Sunday afternoon.

Carragher believes a quick turnaround of three league fixtures marks an opportunity for his former club to remind all of their title credentials.

Speaking on Sky Sports on Friday Night Football, he said: “A point would put Liverpool back at the top of the table, that’s the position they want to be in.”

“I think in the first half of the season Liverpool made five or six statements that made people stand up and notice that this is the real deal and a team that is going to challenge.”

“We’re almost in March and Liverpool haven’t made one of those statements yet in the new year. Between now and the end of the season they’re probably going to have to make four or five of them. If they could go and win, it would be a massive three points for the table obviously but also for Man City.”

Liverpool follow up their clash with United by hosting Watford at Anfield on Wednesday, before visiting Goodison Park to face Everton on Sunday.

With Tottenham dropping points in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Burnley, the Reds have a timely opportunity to restore some breathing space at the top.

March promises to truly mark the beginning of the business end to the season.
