Steve Nicol makes bizarre Jurgen Klopp sacking claim

Former Reds defender Steve Nicol says Jurgen Klopp will not be allowed to dictate when he leaves the club – saying he will be sacked before then.

Klopp left both Mainz and Borussia Dortmund of his own accord, and there is certainly no reason to believe the club want to get rid of him, but Nicol is adamant that Klopp’s time at Anfield will run its course.

Nicol told ESPN FC, via the Daily Express: “I don’t think it will be up to him [when he leaves]. I think the only way that he’s not Liverpool’s manager is if the owners decide that they’re not on an upward spiral.

“A lot of times, particularly these days, things just come to an end – they run themselves out. It’s a case of getting over that final hurdle until such times as things start to go the wrong way.”

Clearly, if Liverpool did suddenly fall off a cliff results-wise, a decision would have to be made – but given that seems unlikely to be the case on the current evidence, and there are no better options out there, this seems a strange thing to suggest.

It would take some drop-off for that to happen and it’s bizarre to even be speaking about something like this given the current situation of the club – we’re in a great place. There’s no better manager in the world who gets Liverpool like Klopp does.

The boss famously spent seven years at each of his previous two teams, and while there have been suggestions that he could be tempted to remain at Anfield for longer than that, time will tell as to whether that is the case.

We certainly can’t see him being sacked, though.
