Ian Wright takes unnecessary sly dig at Jordan Henderson

Former Arsenal and Crystal Palace striker Ian Wright has taken an unprovoked swipe at Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson.

Speaking about 19-year-old Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi on his YouTube channel, Wright said the young Frenchman does not take the safe option and pass sideways – unlike Reds the captain.

Wright said: “Guendouzi, for a 19-year-old, to come into the team and play continuously up to this point [is amazing].

“You know, he makes some mistakes and I’m seeing some s**t, people writing he gives the ball away.

“He’s always trying to pass [forward] and do productive stuff, he’s not sideways when he can go forwards – he doesn’t do that Henderson move. He wants to pass forward and he should be encouraged to do that.”

It’s such an unnecessary thing to add onto what was a completely valid point about the Arsenal man. It’s not even true – a lot of Henderson’s passes are good ones and he’s been in good form recently.

For Jurgen Klopp to retain Henderson as captain and play him regularly in the big games shows he clearly rates him – and we certainly trust the boss’ judgement.

Henderson’s experience could be vital not only in Sunday’s Merseyside derby, but for the rest of the season. He won’t play every game, but he’ll certainly be involved in the majority between now and May.
