Ian Wright gives stark assessment of Naby Keïta

Speaking on The Monday Night Club show on BBC Radio 5 Live on Monday night, legendary Arsenal icon, Ian Wright, offered some reproving words on Naby Keïta’s performances in a Liverpool shirt. The Guinea star’s lack of goals was top of his list of critcisms.

The former Arsenal striker said: “Keïta, we are expecting a lot more from him. In his last season at Leipzig, he had nine goals and seven assists.

“Klopp has brought him in, and he might have thought he might have nicked a few more goals up to this point.”

Of course, we were all hoping to see more from Keïta, especially after he showed so much promise in his début against West Ham on the opening day of the season. But, for various reasons, it hasn’t quite yet happened for the twenty-four-year-old.

Keïta is a confidence player; he needs starts, minutes, and goals to play at his full potential. We’ll have to hope that he proves his worth to Jürgen in training if he’s to be given the chance to demonstrate his development under his management.

During the 2017-18 campaign, at RB Leipzig, Keïta scored six goals and provided five assists in 27 Bundesliga appearances. He also managed to notch a further two goals and two assists for Leipzig in their Champions League campaign.

Numbers like this demonstrate why we spent around £52.75 million on him in the first place. But, Wright is right – he needs to add goals to his game and fast. With nine Premier League games remaining we could do with Keïta stepping up and finding his shooting boots.
